Yes, it broke some stuff, here it was tetex (latex) port. Unix ports with putenv() (clib2 and probably newlib) calls will suffer from improper behaviour when setting env vars.

If you don't have a problem application, then don't bother using the patch. 
The patch just tweaks the functions default semantics for those 
rare programs that don't specify exactly what they want done and 
rely on the &quot;default&quot; behaviour.

and adjust the patch for a  &quot;something or other&quot;.

Even if the technical explanation is allways necessary, simple user need also examples about the problem.
