This is a port of the Linux scanner software "XSane" to AmiCygnix. In this
package the sane backends version 1.0.27 are included.
Compared to the first release of the package "XSane-0.998" many new scanners are
supported and several backends were bugfixed (See list of backends).

New is the backend "hpaio" from the driver software "hplip" by Hewlett-Packard
in the (at the moment latest) version 3.19.8. This adds support of over 500
scanners or all-in-one devices from this manufacturer.
Unfortunately, the data transfer via USB does not work here. The device must
have a network connection (LAN / W-LAN) and be connected to it. This is
basically recommended for performance reasons.
=> Please note the hints below!

At the moment only scanners with USB connector and network interface are
supported. But this should be the majority of the available scanners.

Please notice:

Because of software problems (OS4 USB stack) and hardware problems (articia
bug), the data transfer can freeze sometimes. Also it was reported, that the
whole system can freeze, if you plug in a scanners USB connector. Please keep
this in mind, if you consider to buy a new scanner!

  Additionally included are backends of the following manufacturers:

  - Hewlett-Packard (hpaio / hplip)

    Important notes:

    * As described above, the hpaio backend works only with scanners connected
      to the network. When starting XSane, such a scanner is usually detected
      automatically. This presupposes, however, that the "Bonjour" or the
      "AirLink" service is activated in the printer's settings, as mDNS is used
      for the detection. Detection using SNMP seems not to work.

    * Sometimes the device is still not recognized. For this purpose, the
      program "HPLIP-Selector" was developed, which can be found in the direc-
      tory "Cygnix:Software/XSane-0.999". There, the connected model can be
      selected in a list. After entering the device IP and saving the settings,
      XSane starts directly with this driver without the selection of found
      scanner appears.

      WATCH OUT:

      Please pay attention to the correct selection of the model !!! For damage
      to the device, I assume no liability!

    * Some models require external plugins that are only available in binary
      form for Linux. Even if these devices are found, they will not work. The
      program "HPLIP-Selector" filters these out automatically.

      This mainly applies to scanners that require support for one of the
      following scan protocols:

      * SOAP1
      * Marvell
      * SOAP2
      * ESCL
      * ORBLITE

      On the other hand, the following protocols should work:

      * SCL
      * PML
      * Duplex SCL
      * LEDM
      * Marvell2

  - Epson (epkowa / iscan)

    Important: Many of the scanners supported by the epkowa backend do need
               an external library provided by Epson. The sources of these
               libraries are not available, so they cannot be compiled for OS4.
               Please have a look at the file "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/gtk2.24/share/
               iscan-data/epkowa.desc".

  More informations about these backends you can find on the Sane homepage
  http://www.sane-project.org or in the directory "Cygnix:Software/XSane-0.999/
  doc".

Additional software
-------------------

  These programs are included:

  * scanimage

    A commandline frontend for Sane. More informations in the man file
    "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/gtk2.24/share/man/man1/scanimage.1".

  * sane-find-scanner

    Tests, if a scanner is basically detected by Sane. For a real support
    a corresponding backend must exist.
    See man file "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/gtk2.24/share/man/man1/sane-find-scanner.1".

  * gamma4scanimage

    Creates a gamma table for "scanimage".
    See man file "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/gtk2.24/share/man/man1/gamma4scanimage.1".

  * saned

    A Sane daemon that allows remote clients to access image acquisition devices
    available on the local host.
    Works only in debug mode (call "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/gtk2.24/sbin/saned -d").
    See man file "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/gtk2.24/share/man/man8/saned.8".

  * gocr

    Converts an image into text (version 0.52).
    See man file "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/man/man1/gocr.1".

  Hint: The man files can be viewed with "xman", accessible via the desktop
        panel.
