The VIAD2 file should play with the new 4.3.1 version as long as you have
unpacked the VIAD2.w file in the same place.

@spot

I assume you unpacked the files directly into a volume rather than into a
subdrawer? The code in mtpng that tries to get the path where the file is only
stops at a '/' character and not ':'.

my quest to hunt down appleII guys to find out about this .w file continues..
the email on ians homepage bounces.. i found an irc channel with a guy that knew
him, but haven't spoken to him for 18 years :D

he had this to say about the .w file, that confirms my suspicions:

Oh, in that context, it's the wavs for the audio, instruments.
The other is the sequence.
Probably either has a header, with lenghts of
each instrument or they each take a specific length.

i searched the net to try to find out if this might be an archive with samples.
this is all i found so far:
"Unknown Apple II File (found on Golden Orchard Apple II CD Rom)"
I will write the author of the player and ask.

it fails to play this tune among others:
http://home.cfl.rr.com/ischmidt/songs/viad2.zip

the tune consists of two file:

VIAD2
VIAD2.W

The .W file seems to be the samples. mtpng can't find them. This is how the
shell output looks:
